Resolutions

Resolution #1 Stop hitting the snooze button  The alarm goes off and I immediately hit snooze. I usually set it for 5:25 AM to give me time to slowly rise before 6:15 AM yoga, but I inevitably snooze until 6:05 and miss my class altogether. I did remedy this the other night: showered and ready for bed, I slipped into leggings, a yoga tank, and bra instead of my light flannel PJs. At 6:05 AM Tuesday morning after “snoozing” for 40 minutes I turned off my heating pad (yes, I sleep with one) rolled out of bed, brushed, rinsed, and ran out the door. I made it to the studio in a respectable 13 minutes only slightly late and ready to roll, but started wilting at the 40 minute mark in class, leading to my next resolution … Resolution #2  Keep swimming  My yoga instructor is tight in body, instruction, mindset, and in discipline. Girlfriend also uses a heck of a lot of metaphors and motivational lines during each class. “If you let go of the toe, …

Monkey Mind

My busiest thinking comes when I am not supposed to think at all. It begins as soon as the studio becomes quiet, once I take that guided breath, and the moment that first intention goes out. My mental mind dump happens during the worst possible time – during yoga. I have days when I can practice ninety minutes with my mind as clear as spring water, but there are days when I have so much on the brain that Monkey Mind inevitably happens at the onset of Half Forward Fold. It is most inconvenient. Trying to recall if I hit “send” on that private Facebook message I wrote and rewrote for an hour can probably wait one MORE hour. Telling myself I should offer to lead circle time soon in the Teddy Bear Room as I chant OM is not what you’d call being present. Whether or not I should have a carnitas taco on a soft corn tortilla shouldn’t matter at 7:30am doing Triangle Pose. Realizing I didn’t get the best deal for my laundry …

Birthday Babe

Having a ‘milestone’ birthday was not what had been preoccupying my mind.  It was deciding how to celebrate that nagged at me.    For at least one year I had been listening to people ask, What’s your celebration going to be for the big four-oh?  Are you traveling?  Where will you go?    Are you having a party?  You must have a party!  Have a girls’ weekend!  Plan a group trip out of town!  Yes, let’s do that!   It’s one thing to embrace an idea and it is another to commit to an event. There are schedules, spouses, children, preferences, group dynamics, and budgets to consider.   In my mind, nobody but the celebrant is ever truly responsible for organizing her party and as enthusiastic as people were to get on board with anything I could have wanted:  Camping Extravaganza, Beach Retreat, Coastal Getaway, European Sojourn, Asian Adventure, Epic Picnic, Dive Bar Disco you name it –  I do not have the mental nor emotional bandwidth to execute an important plan like that the way …

No Middle Ground between Oreos and Working Out

I like yoga.  I really do!  I enjoy a good stretch, getting my oooooommmmm on, and even the trembling of a dormant arm muscle now and then.  I’ve also been known to enjoy higher intensity workouts because they make me feel strong, energized and are AMAZING for the complexion.  Do you know what else I like?  Feeling blissed out after eating a stack of Oreos.  My friends know how much I like cookies, especially the Golden Oreos that didn’t even make it to my photo shoot this afternoon.  Originally there was a really big pile of them for the intended picture for this post, but by the time I got my camera out, there was just a stack of five.  Oops… like I said…   I really like cookies. During a catch up phone call with Dramanut,  I told her I needed to get off the phone after an hour in time to get changed and make it to Burn.  As the minutes flew by between laughs and anecdotes, I said, “Oh, I am going …
