Love Where You Live

At the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Yamhill River in the Willamette Valley, sits the historic town of McMinnville, Oregon.  Fresh off of a full day exploring Portland following The Hello Sessions the night before, at least a dozen of my friends and I headed 40 miles southwest for the ‘Love Where You Live’ wine country dinner. Co-hosted by the gracious Chelsey Nichol of Type A Press and my savvy friend, Maggie Battista, of Eat Boutique, guests were served passed hors devours, cocktails, and a 5-course family style meal prepared by Let Um Eat Collective inspired by Maggie’s new cookbook, Food Gift Love. Chelsey’s fourth generation family-owned printing warehouse, which houses her antique letterpress, and the studios of painter, Zach Hixson and sign painter, Mitch Horning, served as the venue. Until you make it up to Oregon for your next weekend getaway, and I strongly suggest you do, here is a taste of McMinnville for you to enjoy at home. “Newby’s Ransom Punch”, named for the founder of McMinnville, William T. Newby, and the locally produced Ransom Spirits, was …

Stepping Away

When we push ourselves beyond comfort, we grow, correct?  When we want to do something better, we practice, persevere, and change our routines in order to develop better habits and mastery, don’t we?  So in trying to improve my blog by reviewing old posts while writing new ones that I edit more closely, am I becoming a sharper writer by focusing so much longer on one post at a time while chained to my chair, or am I becoming stupider because I cannot process nor execute anything substantial within an eight hour work period? The Smarty Pants part of my mind thinks that the list of new ideas sprouting left and right are ingenious,  but the Annie Adderall part sees that these ideas take no root and then I am quickly bored by them.  Is my cognitive processing tearing down old muscle to build newer stronger mental muscle or am I just diminishing any function I have left? Do you ever think, “Hmm… maybe I’m NOT getting better at this?  Maybe I can’t REALLY do everything I have my mind set to?” That’s …

Weekender

I dream often of having a weekend life, where at least once a week I can look out of my window and see birds not bums, and pools of water instead of pools of – well… it IS downtown San Francisco if you know where I am going with that. Last weekend we had a rejuvenating little trip to Big Sur.  Living in the city begs for weekend road trips to the coast, the woods, wine country, what have you.  How happy these excursions into nature make me.  Though I spent a lot of time playing in the woods and outdoors as a kid back east, I wouldn’t call myself a nature girl.   I imagine that would involve a willingness to sleep in a bag instead of an air mattress or foraging in the wilderness in place of keeping the campsite lock box full of groceries from Whole Foods.  A nature girl only cares where the sun is so she can tell time or navigate during a day long hike, versus a girl like …

The Weekend Warrior

My classic Weekend Warrior Style. Image c/o google images. It is 1:03 am on Saturday morning and I have declared at least for this weekend I will be a warrior.  I will get things done.  I will ‘let go’ and tackle my self imposed to do list. What will this weekend warrior do?  Nothing special, but here are the four things  I will be working on Saturday and Sunday.  Let’s see where I am come Monday morning. Pondering prior to pursuing. Apologize to Toffifay.  This little penguin is my travelling mascot.  The hubby and I found him a few years ago prior to our trip to Spain, maybe earlier.  Tired of hearing from family, “Why do you just take pictures of sites on vacation?  How do we know it’s really you taking them?”  Enter Toffifay, our funny fluffy pocket sized penguin.  If he is in the picture, then you know one of us was taking it.  Toffifay likes to travel and he likes to be a part of the action.  During my recent trip to …
