A Gal, A Blog, and Her Pictures

Behind the pictures is the gal writing this blog,  while behind this blog is  the gal taking the pictures. Some time ago, my Chicago based bloggy friend, domesticatedesk, encouraged me to start matching up my posts with a picture taken from my point of view to help illustrate a theme, in place of relying on Google and Bing Image searches to help support my content.  Of course I had a friendly point of contention:  Where will I take a picture of an old couple arguing if that is what will perfectly illustrate my life as a wife frustration at 9pm?  Why fret when there are definitely stock photos of a flaky croissant for free use because I already ate all of mine, thus my need for said croissant photo?  If I think I am at my wit’s end from overwhelming annoyance and stress, who best to provide a visual than Kristin Wiig? Using stock imagery has allowed me the freedom to write about topics in mind even though they lack a visual presence in my life.  I …

#GirlGoneWildbpstyle

I went pretty wild over Memorial Day Weekend … bp style.  I went camping.   Here are just a few of the pictures in the wild taken by Husband, by our buddies Petit Parachute and Gadmachine, and by yours truly.  I pulled some lines (in italics)  directly from the journal I kept during the weekend, which will give you a small peak into what the experience was like.  So lucky we are to be living in California.  More power to the Department of Parks and Recreation.   Journal entry excerpts May 26-27, 2014 Fallen Leaf Campground, South Lake Tahoe, California  (all times of day) Thank goodness for melatonin, but it was a gorgeous, quiet sleep I had.  Save for the strong cold air blowing through the tent – hubby says we need to get one of those extra covers that goes over the tent for added insulation- I dare say I was pretty prepared last night and we fit nicely on top of our air mattress in our sleeping bags.  Do I shower now or later? I …

Letting Loose While Still In My Thirties

Hop on over to My Thirty Spot and see how different letting loose is for me now.  Photo source. I have been a fan of MyThirtySpot since finding Erin Kennedy’s thirties-centered blog last year. Once I hit “publish” after completing my post entitled  Why I Am Not Sweating My Late-r Thirties last summer,  I was interested in finding similarly toned subjects focused on thirty-something women, and found Erin’s blog.  Her contributors’ segment, Love for 30, is a perfect opportunity  to share my writing with a wider audience. It also prompted me to think, “Goodness, I’d better contribute something original to Erin for review while I am still in my thirties.”    I was thrilled to hear back immediately from Erin recently with an opening to join her community.  How proud I am to have a guest post on My Thirty Spot today!  Though it took me a year to revisit my plan, I made it, AND I am still in my thirties.  You must check it out.  {Click here} to read why Letting Loose is Different in My Thirties.

Her

Note:  This post was written and posted 6/6/2012.  I thought of it yesterday while shopping downtown with my sister, both of us doing double takes at well put together & effortlessly cool women.  It’s funny how all of us look at other unsuspecting women with admiration & awe, but cannot imagine other women who might be looking at us the same way.  What do you think?           You know who she is.  Effortless.  Poised.  Pretty.  Cool.     Audrey Hepburn casually reading a book outdoors in between takes. When I was about six years old, there was a girl in my school who could sing, dance and was cute as a button.  She was a cheerleader, a brownie, and had a starring role in every school play and holiday show from what I can recall.  Everything she did, I thought was just right.  Her bowl cut was always shiny and perfectly curled under at the ends.  Her satin green bomber jacket gleamed in the sun.   I loved her classic …

When It Hurts

I am learning how to practice yoga.  I fall in and out of love with it, never really feeling capable of holding the poses, or doing a deep enough twist, but always go back now and then for more.  Yesterday, I attended class with a woman who I really liked.  I easily could follow her instruction, and could visualize certain muscles or energy points “turning in,” “shooting out,” or “expanding” under her guidance.  We didn’t do anything especially difficult, in fact everything we did was extremely basic but slow and purposeful.   Little tweaks here and there, my body would go from ‘managing’ to “oh hell, oh, I see — there we go!”  Muscles trembling, dripping in sweat, and grunting in the 80 degree heated room, the three of us in the small studio managed to let out a laugh as the instructor said, “It hurts when you’re doing it right!” It hurts when you’re doing it right.   Upon hearing these words, something clicked.  I felt validated.  We are talking about more than just yoga here.  …
